LETS TALK: MARATHON! DANCE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, JOANNE BAKER SHARES HER THOUGHTS.

Friday, October, 14, 2016

baker_joanneI have attended, taught, or participated in every Dance Class Marathon since 1993. Back in that first year, I was an apprentice dancer with the DJD Company and the Marathon ran over 3 days – Friday night to Sunday night. DJD had just moved into our new facility on 4th street after many great years on 10th street NW. The Marathon was an initiative that was geared to dancers of all levels, introduced people to different styles, and brought people into our new home. I remember dancing in so many great classes that weekend! I had recently returned to Calgary after time away in Ontario to go to University, so not only was I proud to represent the DJD Company, it was awesome to see and meet so many people dancing in the community.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach at the Dance Class Marathon, stand on the sidelines and cheer dancers on, hand out prizes to those who danced the FULL day, and marvel at the talent that we as a dance community have within our teachers and dancers. The Marathon brings people back to DJD (and Calgary) year after year. I remember the ladies from Vernon who would make the drive each year to dance as much as they could before they had to drive back. I remember the high school kids from Edmonton experiencing West African dance for the first time. I remember first time dancers along side seasoned veterans. The Marathon has been a place where friendships have been fostered and memories made; both that will last a lifetime.

And now, as we look forward to hosting our 24th Dance Class Marathon, I am so excited for so many of our regular “Marathoners” to step foot into our new home. I can’t wait for them to check out the view from Studio 5, dance on the beautiful floors in Studio 1, and feel they are “up on stage” in Studio 2. The DJD Dance Centre promises to make this years Marathon the best yet!

The 24th Annual Dance Class Marathon is on Sunday October 23, 2016.
