ADVANCED INTENSIVE – August 13-15 –Contemporary Fusion
1. WHEN DID YOU START DANCING? & DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THAT DANCE WAS GOING TO BE A BIG PART OF YOUR LIFE?
I didn’t start dancing until I was about 14/15 years old, and I actually entered dance through the world of hiphop. But it wasn’t until I attended the Performance Dance Program at Ryerson University, that I knew that dance was going to be a big part of my life. That is where I opened up my eyes to movement being a vital artistic expression.
3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL EXPERIENCE IN YOUR CAREER?
Having the incredible opportunity to travel to Montreal and Vienna to advance my training and artistic practice were key milestones for me. These opportunities not only played a big part in my development, but also affirmed my desire to build and grow the Calgary community and to continue making art in this city! Project InTandem has also been a key component of my journey.
4. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR ROLE MODELS?
There are many teachers, choreographers, artists and organizations that have been a big part of my journey and shaped the artist that I have become today. Some of which include: Deanne Walsh, Helen Husak, Davida Monk, Pamela Tzeng, the entire DJD community (PTP training, etc), Melanie Kloetzel (kloetzel&co), Jason Galeos (J-Sik Movements), Dancers’ Studio West, Corps Bara Dance Theatre, Alyssa Martin (Rock Bottom Movement), Allen Kaeja & Karen Kaeja (Kaeja d’Dance), and Meghann Michalsky (co-creator of Project InTandem).
5. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF ASPIRING DANCERS?
Be curious. Be hungry for opportunity. Build strong relationships. Immerse yourself into the community. Continue training!
