There are many people that make up the community at the DJD Dance Centre. From artists, administrators, volunteers and beyond, these walls are pulsing with personality.

KATHARINA SCHIER

1. WHEN DID YOU START DANCING?
I started dancing when I was 4 years old

2. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THAT DANCE WAS GOING TO BE A BIG PART OF YOUR LIFE?
I always wanted to dance and have had an overwhelming passion for it my whole life. Now, looking how it has shaped me and all the hardship and joy it has brought me, I know it will always be a part of my life.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL EXPERIENCE IN YOUR CAREER?
The most influential experience in my career has been working with Tony Williams (artistic director of City Ballet Boston). There I was able to experience a really courageous and “out-of-the-box” style of art making. Art that is concerned with youth, story telling and relevance to the people of our time. In a world where “everything has already been created” how can we strive to tell the stories of today’s audiences in an innovative way?

4. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR ROLE MODELS?
I have never been a person to have role models who are “far away” I suppose. Most of the people who influence or inspire me are people I have met and worked with. I have always been inspired by people who have great road blocks in life (and dance) that are out of their control and yet they push boundaries and live their passions. The people who are put into boxes but cannot be contained! Those people amaze me!

5. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF ASPIRING DANCERS?
For the next generation of dancers I always say, know your history and the roots of your form. Be humble and sensitive to the social and cultural history and strive to understand why the dance is what it is. In addition be empowered  to find your own individual self expression. The way we move is expressive of who we are and vice versa.  Many of the rules you are surrounded with are not truths. Know the truths and know the rules… know the difference! What values are you holding and why? Passion and hard work is just as valuable as a dancer as it is in any other field … don’t forget that… you’re passion and hard work is enough! You don’t need someone else’s permission!
