Danny Nielsen combines dazzling technique, natural musicality, and a drive to constantly innovate with a heartfelt desire to honour the rich traditions of the form. Alexandrov, Nava and Nielsen is a collaboration with renowned Bulgarian pianist/percussionist Kristian Alexandrov which delves into the symbiotic relationship between tap dance and jazz piano. Completing the trio is Calgary based, Venezuelan born, bassist extraordinaire, Daniel Nava. Touching on new takes of old standards, and original music, the three will co-create a performance drawing on everything from traditional and contemporary jazz to R&B, hip hop and rock. Alexandrov, Nava and Nielsen is a proud co-presentation by DJD and OYR in the High Performance Rodeo.

This performance includes a post show Tap Jam!

How do I attend?

The Tap Jam is included in the price of your ticket to Friday’s performance. You must purchase and attend the Friday performance in order to attend the Tap Jam.

What is a Tap Jam?

Jam sessions are a key part of jazz culture.  They use improvisation in different ways and can be completely free or more structured.  They allow jazz artists to come together, develop ideas, converse, give and receive mentorship.

In this post show tap jam, tap dancers are invited to bring their shoes and sit in (participate).

We will close the jam with another great tradition- the Shim Sham Shimmy- a tap dance originally credited choreographically to Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant in 1928 that has also been danced by jazz dancers for almost as long.  The Shim Sham is a simple 32 bar chorus made up of 4 steps and a break.

Do you have to participate in the Tap Jam?

No, it will be exciting and fun to watch so feel free to stay and cheer on the dancers taking part in the jam!
