PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic DJD recognizes that there is a greater need for financial assistance. We have found some reserve funds that we are dedicating to eligible PTP students to offset the costs of the program for those that are in financial need at this time. Bursary award amounts range from 25-50% of the program costs, available for the 2021/2022 season.
DJD’s PTP program is an eight-month training experience. The PTP is dedicated to the development of skilled and knowledgeable jazz dance artists. The program runs Monday to Friday, September to May, with three to four hours of training each day. Participants study Jazz, Tap, Jazz Improvisation, West African, Swing, Latin, Core Strength, DJD Repertoire, Jazz History and Jazz Music Appreciation.
The dancers of the Professional Training Program experience a style of jazz dance that is unique to DJD. The DJD Company is dedicated to exploring, evolving and promoting the art of jazz dance. PTP participants are consistently exposed to the artistry of the company’s dancers and choreographers and most of the instructors in the program are former DJD company members who are committed and passionate educators. The program cultivates a high technical standard that emphasizes stylistic and vernacular nuance as well as individual expression both as dancers and jazz choreographers.
With the program accepting only 10 to 15 students each year, the emphasis is on individual growth and development. Students receive continuous individual feedback and guidance that encourages them to strive for excellence and attain their full potential as dance artists.
There are various performance opportunities for PTP dancers. These include informal studio showings, special appearances, and a year end final production (Footprints).

Feedback from PTP participants:
“This training has had an incredible influence on me as a dancer. It has validated my passion for dance connected to soul and rhythm, refined my general technique and made me a more responsive, precise and confident dancer. Dancing in DJD’s PTP was learning to dance the way I have always wanted to dance”
“ I am more versatile, have a better understanding and embodiment of musical connection, and am more precise in my movement and performance/interpretation. The feedback offered in PTP is extremely personalized so I came out of my experience with knowledge that continues to process through my body and mind.”
“My teachers were helpful in hearing what I wanted to focus on and communicated with me during class and outside of class throughout the semester. This kind of personalized and honest feedback is hard to come by as a working professional.”
“The impact is incredible/ I feel more grounded, connected in my own body, it helped me to understand and develop skills in relationships with dance and music.”
