Tonight we say "thank you" to our Jazz Roots Club

Tuesday, February, 25, 2014

Tonight represents a special night for us at DJD. Tonight we get the pleasure of thanking some very important people in our lives. These people are dedicated supporters of DJD, lovers of jazz and dance, and continually provide emotional strength for our organization. Without them, we’d be nothing. Tonight, at our annual Jazz Roots Reception, we get to say “thank you.”

Jazz Roots Club members are people who make a charitable gift of $500 or more annually to DJD. Members have direct relationships with the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks professional dancers, enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences, and are vital contributors to bringing original jazz works to life and to the lives of others.

One such supporter is Karen Mark, a DJD fan since she first moved to Calgary in 1986. We sat down with Karen and asked her a few questions about what she loved most about DJD.

How long have you supported DJD?

“I’ve been a fan since I moved to Calgary in 1986 and first enjoyed the magic of a DJD performance. I then uped the ante in 2002 when I was looking to make a volunteer commitment to the co
mmunity and I joined the Board of Directors. I was on the Board for 5 years from 2002 – 2007.”

What do you love about DJD?
“I love so many things about DJD. I love the people and the product. I think Kathi Sundstrom is a fantastic and tireless Executive Director. I love Vicki Adams Willis, the Founder in Residence and th
e heart and soul of DJD. And Artistic Director, Kimberley Cooper, the present and future of DJD. And of course the talented and inspiring dancers. The combination of jazz dance and jazz music – often live jazz music – keeps me coming back.”

What does being a Jazz Roots Member mean to you?
“Being able to support DJD thru the Jazz Roots Club is a small price to pay for being part of the DJD family and having an ‘up close and personal’ relationship with the organization and the dancers. I love being invited to attend dress rehearsals. I love introducing my family and friends to the DJD experience. I love being able to attend special events. DJD is like a tight-knit and quirky family, and to be a part of that family is life-changing for me.”

Why do you recommend others support DJD?

“Supporting DJD is an investment in the artistic and cultural fabric of Calgary. If you love jazz dance and jazz music; if you want to contribute vital and energetic, creative force in the community; if you want to have fun, celebrate – and be celebrated – then joining the Jazz Roots Club is the way to go.”
