Meet new DJD Company Apprentice Rubens Lopes
It’s about time you met Rubens. This brilliant young man from Brazil has been dancing with DJD for the past few months. You probably noticed him in Year of the Horse, wondering “who is that guy”? Here’s his story:
Name: Rubens Lopes
Birthday: December, 14
Home town: Fortaleza, Brazil
Years dancing: 10
Why did you start dancing?
I started as an actor. My teacher told me my body was very expressive on stage and that I should try dancing to better my physical performance. That’s how I started dance. I fell in love with it and stopped acting.
What do you love about Jazz Dance?
I love the possibility of musical transitions in jazz. I feel as if I can dance with all my strength because each movement could be the last one and it makes me want to dance as if I could die after it.
What do you like about DJD?
Everything is new to me but in Brazil I’m doing research about Black bodies and Black dancers and the relationship between traditional and contemporary movements within the body. I call this Black Practices and in DJD I have the opportunity of expanding this research. In my city there is no research of Jazz roots.
What’s your favourite thing about Calgary?
I suppose it would be the people but I don’t know yet.
What are your guilty pleasures?
I appreciate drinks and food and to observe people and see how they act in every day life.
