DJD’s Company Dancers: What to Expect at Marathon

This year, six of Decidedly Jazz’s very own company dancers will be teaching at the annual Dance Class Marathon fundraiser Sunday October 23.  DJD is excited to offer participants an opportunity to learn from these talented artists, alongside other incredible DJD instructors in our new Dance Centre home! 

All of DJD’s company dancers have been  busy rehearsing for the winter production: Juliet & Romeo, showing January 18-28th. Kaleb, Kaja, Rodney, Julia, Sabrina & Miha are taking time out Sunday, October 23 to teach at the Marathon. We caught up with them to share a word with you on what to expect in class! 

 

 KALEB TEKESTE, DANCER 

GROUP CLASS, TEACHER MASH-UP WITH EDGAR REYES: URBAN GROOVES

 

WHAT TO EXPECT: “We gets busy!”

 

Kaleb is a Calgary based dancer, choreographer and teacher. In 2004 he joined DJD’s Professional Training Program and in 2006 he understudied Kimberley Cooper’s in Charcoal and Crimson. As fate would have it, he found himself jumping into a role a few days before opening night thus marking his debut with DJD. Kaleb is in his eighth season with DJD. 

 

KAJA IRWIN, DANCER

CLASS: JAZZ/FUNK

 

WHAT TO EXPECT: “Jazz with a funk feel, is exactly what it is!”

 

Originally from Winnipeg, MB, Kaja started her dance training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School (RWB). She continued her studies in DJD’s Professional Training Program and since then has been performing, choreographing and teaching in Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto. Kaja is in her second season with DJD. 

 

 

 

RODNEY DIVERLUS, DANCER

CLASS: DIVA STYLE HIP HOP

 

WHAT TO EXPECT: “Let’s get sassy, sweaty & groovy!”

 

Hailing from Toronto, Rodney is a multidisciplinary performer, choreographer, write, and curator. He is a graduate of Ryerson University’s Performance Dance program and is in his second season with DJD. 

 

 

JULIA COSENTINO, DANCER

CLASS: CONTEMPORARY JAZZ

 

WHAT TO EXPECT: ” A fusion of my favorite contemporary and jazzy ways.”

Originally from Toronto, ON, Julia received her BFA Honors Degree in Dance from York University in 2012.  Since graduating, Julia has had the pleasure of training, collaborating, and performing with varies companies. This is Julia’s second season with DJD.

 

SABRNIA COMANESCU, APPRENTICE

CLASSES: DANCEHALL & SOCA

WHAT TO EXPECT, DANCEHALL:  “Learn the hottest dance moves with a groovy island style! Dancehall is considered to be the “hip-hop” of the Caribbean.” 
WHAT TO EXPECT, SOCA:  “Skip the airfare, here is your free ticket to a Caribbean Carnival! Jump! Wave! Wine! And have fun!”

Sabrina is a dynamic member of the Calgary Dance Community especially in the urban and Caribbean dance scene through her work as an instructor, performer, and choreographer. Sabrina is in her second season with DJD. 

 

 

MIHA MATEVZIC, APPRENTICE

CLASS: HIP HOP

WHAT TO EXPECT: ” Fun & Funky! “


Originally from Slovenia, Miha started his dancing career relatively late at the age of 17. His dancing has allowed him to travel to Los Angeles, New York, London, Denmark, Germany and Italy, to train with some of the most renowned choreographers in the world. This is Miha’s first season with DJD. 

 

 

Come move with the company dancers and DJD instructors on Sunday October 23! Explore various dance classes including Funk, Bollywood, African Grooves, Jazz/Swing, House, Pilates, other great styles and fusion classes. 

 

DANCE CLASS MARATHON, SUNDAY OCTOBER 23, 9:30AM – 6:00 PM (JOIN IN ANYTIME)

 


CHOOSE YOUR CHALLENGE 

  • Full Marathon $80 (includes all marathon classes, tee-shirt, water bottle & 5 class card)
  • Half Marathon $60 (includes 4 classes plus one group class tee-shirt & water bottle)

5K $40 (includes 2 classes plus one group class & tee-shirt)
