Day in the life: Sylvie Moquin
To continue our Day in The Life Series we spoke with DJD Professional Training Program Member Sylvie Moquin about her daily routine and about dance. Here’s our Q&A with Sylvie.
Please state your name, age, place of birth, current place of residence?
Sylvie Moquin. 23. Born and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. Lived in Toronto, Ontario for 4 years (went to Ryerson University where I got my BFA in Performance Dance). Moved to Calgary this past September to attend the Professional Training Program (PTP) with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. Currently live downtown Calgary in Eau Claire.
Why do you dance?
I dance because it is my way of self expression. Dance is always challenging me, and I always feel like there is more to learn. It is a passion and a lifestyle.
What do you eat for breakfast?
What do you wear to dance?
A combination of athletic wear and loose clothing, always something comfortable
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to have a career in the performing arts. For now my focus is performing and developing myself as a dance artist, and who knows where that will lead down the road.
What do you eat for lunch, snack, dinner?
Lunch and dinner will always be a mix of vegetables and protein, though I do enjoy a hearty salad!
I often snack on fruits and mixed nuts throughout the day
What do you love about Calgary?
Since moving here I have fallen in love with how friendly everyone is. I love that the city is vibrant but also quite relaxed at the same time. But most of all, I have fallen in love with the dance community in this city and how accepting and welcoming the scene is here.
What do you love about DJD?
I love this style through and through. There is something about immersing yourself into the DJD style that is so satisfying and rewarding. It’s the jazz music, it’s the essence, it’s the soul and most of all it’s the amazing people that encompass this company. I’m not sure who wouldn’t fall in love with what they are all about.
My “regular” day while attending the DJD Jazz Intensive these past 4 days?
(Note: this is very similar to what a day would have looked like for me over the past 8 months while I was attending the PTP with DJD)
Wake up, pack my bag for the day, make smoothie, take the bus to DJD, personal warm up and stretch until class starts, morning class (in this case we had Jazz class with Kimberley Cooper every morning), short break/snack time for me!, 2nd class of the day (West African on Day1 and Day2, Swing class Day3, Funk class Day4), short lunch break, afternoon class: we learnt past DJD repertoire from some of the current company members, stretch after that long day of dancing, bus home, eat dinner and get ready for work, head to work to then complete an 6-8 hour shift, get home, go to bed, do it all over again! Phew!
