DJD Welcomes New Dancer

DJD is pleased to welcome Angel Pardo Bono to the company. Angel was discovered by Vicki and Sarisa who were in Spain taking a flamenco class last summer. He was rehearsing for a commercial gig (along with many other dancers) in the same studio complex that they were taking the course in. Vicki peaked into the studio one day and he caught her eye immediately. “…so I peaked in every day after class,” says Vicki. “On our last day I kept bumping into him and Sarisa was nearby at one point so I said, ‘Sarisa – talk to him.’ We found out that he was a busy freelancer in Madrid, so I assumed he would have no interest in coming to Calgary, but gave him my card – and the rest is history.”

A native of Madrid, Angel has studied many styles of dance including jazz, hip-hop and classical ballet in Spain, New York and Italy. He has performed in musicals such as Robin Hood, The Mask of Zorro, We Will Rock You, and Queen as well as for numerous television programs and galas including the TV series Un paso adelante. He has been back-up dancer for both Spanish and international singers and performer for the independent Grammy music awards in New York’s Lincoln Center. He has taught at various dance schools in Spain and choreographed for the group Urban Dance School. Angel is thrilled to be performing his first show with DJD.

Coming to DJD has been an adventure for Angel and the language has been his greatest challenge:  “For me it’s very important to communicate with people, but little by little I am learning more and more. I guess it is just a question of time.”

In terms of living in Calgary, he says that “the different cultural and ethnic groups that exist in Calgary are truly surprising but at the same time doesn’t make you feel different to other people.”  He says he loves the people and the city and really enjoys the nature and the calm lifestyle of this city. He has also noticed how independent young people are.

Of course Angel misses his family, friends, and “the food of Spain” as well as his dog, whom he loves very much, but he is happy with the move because it gives him “the privilege of having the opportunity to experience something unique, something that is a dream for any dancer who really feels music.” He finds it very gratifying to work with DJD: “To have the opportunity to work in a unique company, in their style and with a jazz band is something you can’t describe – you can only experience. The truth is that it is a pleasure to share the stage with my fellow dancers since they are all great professionals.”

And what are his thoughts about the cross-Canada tour?  “I am truly impressed by what I have already seen of Canada but I am really looking forward to seeing Vancouver and Montreal. Regardless, Canada is a fantastic country!”

Thank you to Sarisa for translating Angel’s answers to our questions.
