DJD Welcomes a New Dancer
|
|
 |
|
|
DJD is pleased to welcome Angel Pardo Bono to the company. Angel was discovered by Vicki and Sarisa who were in Spain taking a flamenco class last summer. He was rehearsing for a commercial gig (along with many other dancers) in the same studio complex that they were taking the course in. Vicki peaked into the studio one day and he caught her eye immediately. “…so I peaked in every day after class,” says Vicki. “On our last day I kept bumping into him and Sarisa was nearby at one point so I said, ‘Sarisa – talk to him.’ We found out that he was a busy freelancer in Madrid, so I assumed he would have no interest in coming to Calgary, but gave him my card – and the rest is history.”
A native of Madrid, Angel has studied many styles of dance including jazz, hip-hop and classical ballet in Spain, New York and Italy. He has performed in musicals such as Robin Hood, The Mask of Zorro, We Will Rock You, and Queen as well as for numerous television programs and galas including the TV series Un paso adelante. He has been back-up dancer for both Spanish and international singers and performer for the independent Grammy music awards in New York’s Lincoln Center. He has taught at various dance schools in Spain and choreographed for the group Urban Dance School. Angel is thrilled to be performing his first show with DJD.

Folks, I’m telling you, birthing is hard and dying is mean – so get yourself a little loving in between
|
|
| You’ll hear these words
from the poem Advice as well as many more by Langston Hughes (1902–67)
interwoven with the music, song, and dance of Magnetic Consequences.
How does poetry fit in to a dance show? As explained by DJD Artistic
Director and choreographer of Magnetic Consequences, Vicki Adams
Willis, jazz is essentially a collaborative effort. “When you listen to
jazz music, you are experiencing the result of a group effort,” says
Willis in her program notes for Magnetic Consequences. “For decades
that essential collaborative spirit has been missing in the world of
jazz dance, and one of our main objectives at DJD has always been to
reintroduce that spirit to the form.” When it comes to this
particular show the spirit of collaboration is alive and well and
although Vicki has never had the privilege or pleasure of really
“collaborating” with Langston Hughes, the inclusion of spoken word fits
the show and celebrates the spirit of collaboration between many –
musicians, dancers, a vocalist, and designers, as well as the words of
a poet.

| Thanks
to donations from people like you, DJD has enabled hundreds of children
from low-income families to participate in a Summer Camp or weekly
class at the School of Decidedly Jazz since 1997. We collaborate with
many partners to select these children, including Calgary Family
Services, Boys & Girls Club and Connaught Community School.
The impact of participating in a dance class goes far beyond the time
they spend with DJD. Often shy and timid at first, it is remarkable to
see the children become unafraid to try new things, gain greater
self-confidence and coordination, make new friends and learn creative
ways to express themselves. These are important lessons that they carry
forward with them for a lifetime.
Make a difference in a child’s life by donating to DJD’s Children's
Bursary Program. Your gift, whatever the amount, will help bring a
smile to a child's face. To donate or for more information, please call
Larissa a 228-8183. More about supporting kids
