PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM

djd-students-373_smallThe Professional Training Program (PTP) at DJD is an eight-month intensive training experience, dedicated to the development of skilled and knowledgeable jazz dance artists. The program runs Monday to Friday, September to May, with three hours of training each day. Participants study Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Jazz Improvisation, West African, Traditional Afro-Cuban Forms, Swing, Latin, Core Strength, Jump Rhythm Jazz Style, DJD Repertoire, Jazz History and Jazz Music Appreciation.

The dancers of the Professional Training Program experience a style of jazz dance that is unique to DJD. The DJD Company is dedicated to exploring, evolving and promoting the art of jazz dance. PTP participants are consistently exposed to the artistry of the company’s dancers and choreographers and most of the instructors in the program are former DJD company members who are committed and passionate educators. The program cultivates a high technical standard that emphasizes stylistic and vernacular nuance as well as individual expression both as dancers and jazz choreographers.

With the program accepting only 10 to 15 students each year, the emphasis is on individual growth and development. Students receive continuous individual feedback and guidance that encourages them to strive for excellence and attain their full potential as dance artists. PTP is recognized as credit toward a University of Calgary Dance Degree.

There are two performance opportunities for the PTP dancers. The first is an in-studio showing of works-in-progress choreographed by program instructors and dancers. The second is a theatre performance, showcasing works choreographed by the program dancers (some developed from the in-studio showing) and program instructors, as well as pieces from the vast DJD repertoire.
